Lawmakers are warning that achieving the ambitious US$1.2 billion target of the Draft 2026 National Budget remains at risk unless key reforms are undertaken.
The budget — the largest yet under the administration of President Joseph Nyuma Boakai — reflects a significant expansion in spending for social projects, civil service restructuring, infrastructure investment, and governance reforms. Lawmakers have, however, stressed that these ambitions must be grounded in realistic projections and strengthened revenue administration.
A legislative committee warned that past budgets have relied on overly optimistic projections that failed to materialize, creating funding shortfalls and arrears. The committee is deeply concerned about the widening gap between projections and actual collections.
