Senior officials of the electoral commision have said all is set ahead of Wednesday’s polls to elect a new president and members of the country’s National Assembly. Regional commissioners of the electoral body sought to assure the electorates that the necessary measures are in place to "guarantee a peaceful, safe and well-organised voting process".

The main opposition Chadema party has, however, announced it is boycotting the presidential election, citing the lack of electoral reforms. The electoral commission has also disqualified the presidential candidate for the second-largest opposition party, the Alliance for Change and Transparency.

With no real competition, analysts have said President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who rose to the presidency in 2021 following the death of her predecessor, looks set to win. In September, Human Rights Watch accused her administration of intensifying political repression and raised concerns about the transparency of the upcoming elections.Â
