Central African Republic Votes as Touadera Pursues a Third Term
Central African Republic (CAR) President Faustin-Archange Touadera.
Elections took place in the Central African Republic with President Faustin-Archange Touadera seeking a third term after a 2023 constitutional referendum scrapped term limits and extended presidential terms to seven years. Voters cast ballots in presidential, legislative, regional and municipal elections.
Seven candidates are contesting the presidency, though analysts see Touadera, first elected in 2016 and re-elected in 2020, as the frontrunner after campaigning on security and infrastructure development. Preliminary results are expected on January 5.
The opposition has accused Touadera of clinging to power and alleged campaign obstruction in the provinces, claims denied by his camp, while an opposition coalition boycotted the vote. The African Union has deployed a team of observers to monitor the election.
