A prominent Liberian broadcaster said several political commentators fabricated lies about former president George Weah, linking him to deaths and disappearances that happened during his tenure.

Stanton Witherspoon, a Liberian broadcaster based in the U.S., said the accusations were coordinated and not "based on evidence" but were instead intended to politically "damage" the former Liberian leader. "We framed routine deaths, natural causes, medical complications, accidents as targeted killings," Witherspoon said, noting that they were aware of how the public would have reacted.

The unexplained deaths of some employees at Liberia Revenue Authority in the early years of the Weah administration — when it grappled with a financial crisis -sparked widespread panic and protests, fueled largely by commentary from influential media personalities.
